I listen closely to lyrics in songs, and definitely have my favorites. I don’t even have to particularly like the song, but I usually end up liking it because I like the lyrics. Some are sweet and romantic, others are funny, and occasionally they are ridiculous (read: obnoxious). Here are a few that stick with me – some have already been mentioned because they are in my favorite songs, but I’m going to repeat them if I really like them.
From “Glitter in the Air” – P!nk “…have you ever looked fear in the face and said, ‘I just don’t care?’…” I did this a couple of years ago, and it was the best decision I ever made.
From “Your Love is My Drug” – Ke$ha- “…my steeze is gonna be affected if I keep it up like a lovesick crackhead…” I had to look up steeze because I’m not as up on current slang as I should be. It means style or manner of being. I love it because it is the perfect line for anyone who has ever experienced a crush.
From “Marry Me” – Train – “…you’ll wear white and I’ll wear out the words ‘I love you’ and ‘you’re beautiful’….” Wow. I would be thrilled to be loved like that!
From “King of Anything” – Sara Bareilles – “…who cares if you disagree? You are not me! Who died and made you king of anything?…” I listen to this song whenever I get really mad at my ex. 🙂
From “Breathe” – Ryan Star – “…breathe, just breathe. Take the world off your shoulders and put it on me…” This isn’t technically a Christian song, but I always think of letting go of my worries and leaving them in God’s hands.
From “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” -by Lyle Lovett and Randy Newman “…if you’ve got troubles, I’ve got ’em too. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you…” This is how I feel about my very best friends: Andy, Amy, and Kris
From “Keep Holding On” by Avril Lavigne “… whatever’s meant to be will work out perfectly…” I like the whole song, but especially the thought that things always work out. They do, although not always in the ways I expect!
From “Why Worry” by Dire Straits “…there should be laughter after pain, there should be sunshine after rain. These things have always been the same, so why worry now…” Why worry, indeed. Somehow we always heal!
From “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers “… some times in our lives we all have pain, we all have sorrow. But, if we are wise, we know that there’s always tomorrow. Lean on me, when you’re not strong, and I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on…” Again for my friends, on whom I have leaned countless times.
From “The Story” by Brandi Carlile “…all of these lines across my face, tell you the story of who I am. So many stories of where I’ve been, and how I got to where I am. But these stories don’t mean anything when you’ve got no one to tell them to…” The song goes on to say that “I was made for you,” but instead I think of how blessed I am with people who are willing to listen to my story, and to remind me of where I’m going when I feel lost.
From “When Fall Comes to New England” by Cheryl Wheeler “…the nights are sharp with starlight, and the days are cool and clean. And in the blue sky overhead, the northern geese fly south instead, and leaves are Irish setter red. When fall comes to New England…” This song is so evocative of home for me that sometimes I just can’t listen to it, because it makes me homesick.
That’s it for this time. There are others, of course, but I don’t want to have such a long post that nobody reads it. Oh, wait… almost nobody reads it anyway! Thank you to those of you who do!! 🙂
